Six new varsities: Committee to submit report today

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Kenneth Gbagi will today (Monday) receive the report of a committee set up to actualise the setting up of six universities across the six geo-political zones.

This is even as the ministry reiterated government’s commitment towards developing the education sector.

The minister had last week inaugurated the committee which he gave the mandate to fashion out details on how best to actualise the government’s directive.

Jigawa and Bayelsa States have been slated to host two out of the six proposed universities.

Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Julius Okojie, who is also the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, confirmed that the report was ready and would be presented today.

In a related development, the minister said President Goodluck Jonathan remained committed to restoring the lost glory of the education sector.

A statement signed by the Deputy Director (Press), Dr. Peter Obidiegwu, quoted the Gbagi as reiterating government’s position.
