Anambra shuts market after deadly clash

Governor Peter Obi

The Anambra State Government, on Thursday, shut the Ngbuka Market at Obosi, near Onitsha, following a clash among traders in the market on Wednesday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Special Adviser to Governor Peter Obi on Parks and Markets, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, announced the closure of the market at Obosi in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra.

Nwobu-Alor said the closure was to allow government, the executive of the Amalgamated Market Traders of Anambra State and leaders in the market to address the cause of the clash which occured on Wednesday.

”I can describe the act of the vigilance security group in the market as barbaric, since they did not shoot into the air to scare traders who were venting their anger but shot at them directly.

“The unprofessional conduct of these security operatives in the market resulted in serious casualty with over 40 people sustaining major injuries.

”I have just been briefed by the Divisional Police Officer here that another person has been confirmed dead, bringing the number of deaths to two,” he said.
