Britain's most prolific surrogate mother gives birth to eighth child in 19 years

Beaming with pride, Jill Hawkins cradles the little boy who has made her Britain’s most prolific surrogate mother. But after giving birth to Oliver – her eighth child in 19 years – the 45-year-old has decided enough is enough, there will be no more babies.
Away from the smiles the legal secretary admits this latest pregnancy has taken a heavy mental and physical toll.
Miss Hawkins spent most of this year on sick leave, confined to her bed for days at a time with nausea and headaches.
Two weeks before Oliver’s due date she went to hospital for a check-up. Doctors were so concerned about her health that they refused to allow her to go home.
Her blood pressure was unusually high, the baby’s heartbeat was too fast and she was vomiting regularly.
Concerned by her weakened state, doctors decided to give her drugs to bring on the labour the following day. And after the birth she was ordered to spend the night in hospital so her condition could be carefully monitored.
Speaking as she recuperated in her two-bedroom flat in Brighton she said: ‘It was frightening because the doctors didn’t know why I was getting so ill.
