End of the road for fortune hunters

Strongface: Shocked at his eviction

With the calm, preoccupied expression of a pedestrian waiting for a street light to change, viewers of popular reality television show, Gulder Ultimate Search, are looking on intently and fervently to see who the next evictee would be.

The last few days have indeed spurned several surprises with some pre-show favourites being shown the way out of the jungle for either failing to meet up in a physical or mental task.

The first evictee was brawny six-footer, Dandison Strongface, who evinced enviable courage and strength, and the right aptitude and attitude from the selection stages, only to falter in the thick of action.

The 22-year-old Rivers State native’s mental capability made mockery of his physical ability during the contestants’ first major individual challenge.

He failed to find solution to his own puzzle and was booted out. He says, “I really feel bad about myself now. I am not supposed to fail in this task today; I don’t know what messed my mind that I couldn’t just focus properly and figure out the right answer.

“Well I believe it is a game. There is bound to be a looser and a winner, and I am the looser. Honestly, I would have loved to stay longer because I enjoyed the company of my friends here. Anyway, it was really fun hanging around them here.”

The eviction of 21-year-old Tonia Oduah remains one of the highlights of the show so far. Her older brother, Melvin, came second in the GUS 6. And she looked forward to surpassing him by becoming the first ever female GUS winner; in another lifetime perhaps.

Lagos-based model, Simeon Okorougo, followed suit. Gloom pervaded the dense jungle when the much-loved Sabdat Bamitale Ahmed was evicted. Nicknamed ‘Mama Jungle’ because of her motherly disposition while in the camp, the 27-year-old basketball player’s eviction was so painful to the other contestants that they decided to immortalise her with a bamboo seat specially constructed and named after her.

Eviction is a debt some of the ultimate searchers owe and the realisation is hitting home more poignantly by the day. This is the seventh season of the show and the last man standing, the Ultimate Hero, will go home with N7.5m cash and a brand new SUV worth over N10m.
