Obasanjo’s aide on trial over Halliburton bribe Obasanjo’s aide on trial over Halliburton bribe

Adeyanju

AFTER several postponements, the Halliburton bribe trial began Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Bodunde Adeyanju, former Personal Assistant to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, was arraigned before Justice Adamu Bello on a six-count charge.
He is accused of receiving various sums of money from George Mark, thereby committing an offence, contrary to Sections 1 and 15 (d), punishable under Section 15(2) (b) of the Money Laundering Act, 2004.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Some Nigerian officials were allegedly given bribes by the United States - based company to boost its chances of landing the Bonny Liquified Natural Gas contract.
The names of other accused persons earlier charged to court along with the former presidential aide, were, however, missing from the charge sheet.
They include George Mark, Hans George Christ, Henry Josef Stock Hausen, Julius Berger Plc and Bilfinger Berger GMBH.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) had announced the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw charges against Julius Berger plc, after the available evidence and the potential hurdle of the evidentiary burden of proof.
