Shock, disbelief greet Fafunwa’s death in Abuja

Former Minister for Education
Shock and disbelief greeted news of the death of a former minister of education, Prof. Babs Fafunwa, in Abuja.

When THE PUNCH sought the reaction of officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to the development, they said they were too shocked to speak.

The ministry’s Deputy Director (Press), Dr. Obediegwu, said he just heard about the demise of the educationist but did not have the details. He explained that a formal statement would be issued after he had obtained clearance from his bosses.

His counterpart in the National Open University, Dr. Ronke Ogunmakin, expressed similar sentiments. She asked our correspondent to wait for an official statement because she was not in a position to speak.

Fafunwa, who turned 87 on September 23, was expected to deliver the keynote lecture at the convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja last Saturday.

A statement from NOUN last week said the event was cancelled due to circumstances beyond its control. It, however, did not elaborate.

Fafunwa had arrived Abuja for the event before its cancellation. He later took ill and was taken to an unnamed hospital where he died in the early hours of Monday.

Officials of the National Hospital and Garki General Hospital, both in Abuja, said he was not their patient.
