Drug war intensifies as NDLEA makes more arrests


As the usual rush to acquire money for the Yuletide season closes in, 16 suspected drug traffickers were arrested in the month of September.

This brings the number of arrested suspected drug traffickers in the year by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, to 150.

This record represents 24 per cent increase in the number of suspects nabbed for drug related offences compared to the 121 arrests made in 2009.

Investigation however indicates a decrease in the quantity of drugs seized. Over 282kg of drugs have so far been intercepted this year while 479.75kg was said to have been seized in the previous year, representing a 41 per cent decrease.

Out of the 282.159kg intercepted this year, cocaine has the largest chunk with 160.21kg; methamphetamine is next with 39.015kg, heroin- 31.398kg and cannabis- 25.050kg.
