Bombings: MTN postpones international seminar

MTN Nigeria has postponed its Life Enrichment Seminar slated for Monday (today) apparently because of the bombings that exploded during the celebration of Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary in Abuja on Friday.

The seminar would have featured American political strategist, Mr. David Plouffe, who was scheduled to arrive Nigeria on Sunday, as lead speaker.

However, indications emerged on Saturday that the telecoms operators might have postponed the much awaited seminar due to the bombings that rocked Abuja on October 1, during the independence celebration.

According to a source close to the company, MTN will not want the public to see the postponement as being necessitated by the bombings but it cannot be disconnected from it because it was supposed to be held in Lagos and Abuja.

Plouffe was scheduled to anchor the two-day international motivational seminar in Lagos, on Monday, October 4, 2010 and on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications, MTN Nigeria, Mrs. Funmi Omogbenigun, was quoted as saying the company regretted the inconvenience the change of date must have caused Nigerians and assured that MTN remained committed to enriching the lives of its customers.

”A suitable new date will be announced. ”MTN remains committed to introducing innovative platforms that will deliver added value to our customers,” she said.

Plouffe, author of ”The Audacity to Win”, is widely acknowledged for churning out strategies most especially the grass roots strategy that resulted in the unimaginable in the history of American politics, giving rise to the election victory of Barack Obama in 2008.

The seminar was designed to focus on how to use the power of social media to connect a dispersed group of people and engage them as volunteers, consumers, employees or voters.

Other aspects of the seminar includes topics on how innovative ways can be used to build brand loyalty and the tactics and tools that can be used in an organisation as well as Building a Grass roots Movement in the 21st Century whilst drawing insights and experiences from the Barack Obama 2008 campaign.
