7 die, 15 injured in 100-vehicle pile-up on SW China expressway

Photo taken on Dec. 27, 2010 shows a crashed truck after heavy fog caused an accident on the express way connecting Guiyang and Zunyi in southwest China's Guizhou Province. A chain of rear-end collisions began after a heavy truck crashed into a petrol station at about 8 a.m. on Monday. At least 7 people were killed and 15 were injured in the accident.

Seven people were killed and 15 others injured when over 100 vehicles crashed into the back of each other on an expressway in southwest China's Guizhou Province Monday morning, local authorities said.

The pile-up began when a truck crashed into a petrol station in Zunyi County at about 8 a.m. At least 100 other vehicles then crashed into the rear of each other, according to local firefighters.

Six people died at the scene. One died in hospital. The injured received treatment at the People's Hospital in Zunyi County.

8 Americans killed in a bus crash in Egypt

CAIRO - A tour bus slammed into a truck in southern Egypt on Sunday, killing eight Americans and injuring 21 others in the latest fatal crash involving tourists, the state news agency said.
The tour bus that was involved in an accident in Abu Simbel, Aswan about 879 km (546 miles) south of Cairo, is seen Dec 26, 2010. [Photo/Agencies]
The bus was taking a tour group on the 115 mile (185 kilometer) journey from Aswan to the ancient temples of Abu Simbel along Lake Nasser, when it ran into the truck carrying sand parked on the side of a single lane desert road, killing six women and two men.
The Egyptian driver and a guide were also injured in the accident.
Egyptian security officials said the hurt Americans were first transferred to a military hospital for treatment and then 10 of the injured, including two Egyptians, were airlifted to a hospital in Cairo.
An official of Misr Sinai Tours, which was running the bus service, said the accident occurred around dawn while it was still dark about 13 miles (22 kilometers) outside of Aswan.
The official said the bus, containing 37 passengers, was part of a larger tour of 116 American tourists traveling in three buses.
The other buses did not continue on to Abu Simbel, and instead returned to Aswan, he said, declining to be identified.
The US embassy in Cairo confirmed that the injured are being moved by military transport to Cairo, but said in a statement that it didn't have any further information on the accident or those involved.
The Great Temple at Abu Simbel, known for its four colossal statues, was built during the reign of Ramses II and was dedicated to the god Amun. It is considered one of the most beautiful ancient monuments in Egypt.
Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic rules, and crashes involving tour groups are not uncommon.
Last month, eight foreign tourists were killed when their tour bus lost control and flipped over several times on a winding mountain road near a resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast, while in October six Belgian tourists were killed in a crash in the south.
Following last month's accident authorities closed several travel operators after complaints of inadequate safety measures and bad driving.
Misr Tours is a joint stock investment company and one of Egypt's leading full service ground operators.
An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents annually in Egypt.

21 killed in plane crash in Karachi, Pakistan

Military and rescue workers search through the wreckage of a passenger plane which crashed near Karachi's Jinnah international airport November 5, 2010.

All the 21 people including four crew members on board were killed in a plane crashed early Friday morning near the Jinnah International Airport of Karachi in southern Pakistan, said a rescue team leader on the plane crash site.

According to the rescue team leader, the 21 killed in the plane crash included 17 passengers, one pilot, one co-pilot, a technician and an air guard.

So far, a total of 15 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of the crashed plane, said an army officer who is leading the rescue work on the site, adding that the bodies recovered are completely burned beyond recognition and it is not known whether there were any foreigners on board or not.

One local media report said that at least one foreigner was on board and details about the identity of the passengers aboard the crashed plane are not announced yet.

Early Friday morning, a Cessna plane capable of carrying a maximum of 23 people on board at one time crashed right after it took off from the Jinnah International Airport of Karachi at about 7:13 am (local time).

The crashed plane belongs to a local air company named JS Air and is currently chartered by a British oil and gas company named ENI in Pakistan. The crashed plane is said to be on its way to an oil field at the Bhit Shah village in the southern part of Sindh province.

Engine failure is the main culprit for the plane crash, said Pervaiz George, spokesman of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Pakistan.

According to the spokesman, the pilot of the crashed plane informed the control tower that the plane had a problem with its right engine and as the plane took a U-turn upon the return request of the control tower and fell down near the airport.

Friday's plane crash has been the second most serious accident of its kind in Pakistan since this year. On July 28, an Airbus 321 carrying 152 people crashed near the country's capital of Islamabad, killing all the people on board. The cause of the disaster is still under investigation. Bad weather is believed to be a possible reason for the crash as it rained heavily when the plane crashed into the densely-wooded Margalla Hills sprawling along the northwestern side of Islamabad.

Saving manufacturing from poor road infrastructure

Saving manufacturing from poor road infrastructure
High cost of transportation has continued to add to the problems bedevilling the manufacturing industry. Industry operators say the impact of poor roads on businesses in Nigeria is becoming too heavy for them to bear. Ronke Badmus writes

It needs no mention that the problem of transportation has become a crucial problem for the manufacturing industry in Nigeria. The difference between what companies spend on transportation (owing mainly to bad roads) and what it should have been if the roads were good has risen to an unimaginable position.

Besides monetary value in terms of costs that are being lost to poor roads, time and human resources are also being wasted daily on the roads. Sometimes, goods completely perish in single-vehicle road mishaps occurring at bad portions of the roads.

Hungary: Two bodies found -- red sludge death toll rises to seven

A local man looks at his garden in the flooded town of Devecser, 150 km (93 miles) west of Hungarian capital Budapest October 8, 2010. Wave of toxic red mud swept through the small village five days ago, killing seven and injuring scores more. The accident -- which officials say is Hungary's worst-ever chemical accident and an "ecological disaster" -- occurred on October 4 when the walls of a reservoir of residue at an aluminium plant in nearby Ajka broke, sending a wave of stinking red sludge through seven villages in the west of the country and leaving a trail of devastation across an area of 40 square kms (15.4 square miles). In Kolontar, the army had to build a temporary bridge to replace one that was swept away by the flood.
