Suspect package disarmed at Greek embassy in Rome

Fire-fighters carrying hoses enter the Greek embassy in Rome, December 27, 2010, as Carabinieri officers stand outside.

ROME -- Bomb disposal experts disarmed on Monday a device sent to the Greek embassy in Rome, days after parcel bomb attacks claimed by an Italian anarchist group wounded two people at the Swiss and Chilean missions.
Police said the package found at the Greek embassy resembled the bombs which exploded in Rome last week, costing an employee of the Chilean embassy two fingers and also injuring a member of the Swiss embassy staff.
"The package was similar to the ones at the other embassies," Maurizio Mezzavilla, an official of the carabinieri, Italy's paramilitary police, told reporters outside the embassy, adding that anarchist involvement "could not be ruled out."
However, he said investigations were still being conducted and there was no firm evidence of who was responsible.
"A suspect package arrived; we immediately informed the carabinieri who arrived immediately and neutralized the bomb," Michael Campanis, the Greek ambassador to Italy told reporters.
He said the package, addressed by hand, had arrived in the embassy on December 24.
"We had not received any threats previously. The packet arrived on Friday afternoon when the embassy was already closed. The staff member found it this morning but security measures had already been stepped up," he said, adding that it appeared likely that the anarchists were responsible.
"Since it was the same kind of package as the others, that is our hypothesis," he said.
Last week, an Italian anarchist group called the Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI) claimed responsibility in a note for the parcel bombs at the Swiss and Chilean embassies.
Authorities have been on high alert since the attacks and there were false alarms at the Venezuelan, Danish, Monaco and Kuwaiti embassies as suspect packages turned out to be harmless.
There were other false alarms at the Irish and Ukrainian embassies last week.
The incidents have re-awakened concern over a potential rise in violence by domestic European militant groups as social tensions have grown following the financial crisis and government austerity packages imposed to pay for it.

Indelible pains: Sri Lankans commemorate vicitims in 2004 tsunami

A Sri Lankan woman commemorates the victims of the December 2004 tsunami, offering flowers, prayers and alms during a special ceremony to mark the six-year anniversary in the southern coastal town of Peraliya on December 26, 2010. Organisers had also restored a train that was damaged during the Boxing Day tsunami for a special journey to Peraliya, that included safron-robed Buddhist monks chanting prayers for hundreds of train passengers who perised when tidal waves slammed the carriages. Some 31,000 people died in the South Asian tsunami, while a million left homeless when tidal waves hit the tropical island's coastal lines.

Science and Health Just found: The planet from another galaxy

This artist's rendering provided by the European Southern Observatory shows a planet, appearing as a crescent at the lower-right of its parent star, HIP 13044 (L).
WASHINGTON - Scientists have discovered the first planet from another galaxy, sort of.

While some 500 planets have been identified in other parts of our galaxy - the Milky Way - none has been reported in other galaxies.
Now one has been discovered orbiting a star called HIP 13044, located about 2,000 light year away. While this star is now in the Milky Way, researchers reported in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science that it originated in a separate galaxy that was later cannibalized by ours.
That makes the new planet, which is about 20 percent larger than Jupiter, the first found to have originated in another galaxy.
"This discovery is very exciting," Rainer Klement of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, said in a statement.
"For the first time, astronomers have detected a planetary system in a stellar stream of extragalactic origin. Because of the great distances involved, there are no confirmed detections of planets in other galaxies. But this cosmic merger has brought an extragalactic planet within our reach."
The new planet is orbiting a star from what is known as the Helmi stream - a group of stars that originally belonged to a dwarf galaxy that was devoured by the Milky Way about six to nine billion years ago.
The researchers say the new planet is also one of the few planets known to have survived the period when its host star expanded massively after exhausting the hydrogen fuel supply in its core. The star has now contracted again, they report.
Johny Setiawan, also from the Max Planck Institute, added that "this discovery is particularly intriguing when we consider the distant future of our own planetary system, as the Sun is also expected to become a red giant in about five billion years."
The study also raises questions about the formation of giant planets, the researchers said, since the host star appears to contain very few elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.
"It is a puzzle for the widely accepted model of planet formation to explain how such a star, which contains hardly any heavy elements at all, could have formed a planet. Planets around stars like this must probably form in a different way," said Setiawan.

Royal engagement stirs UK and the world

The news of Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal engagement has stirred the UK and the rest of the world.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said the wedding will be a "great moment for national celebration".
The University of St Andrews, which Prince William and Kate both graduated from, posted the engagement news on its website. A spokesperson for the university said, "We are absolutely delighted for William and Kate and their families."
"St Andrews is a special place – one in ten of our students meet their future partner here and our title as Britain's top match-making university signifies so much that is good about this community," the spokesperson added.
Next year, St Andrews will launch its 600th anniversary celebrations, "We hope that they will take the opportunity to return to Scotland and join us in celebrating the romance of St Andrews," said the spokesperson.
The UK media went hysterical and the couple's faces are surely bound for the cover of many newspapers and magazines.
The BBC dispatched a helicopter to provide an unchanging aerial shot of Buckingham Palace and pressed its most senior diplomatic and political correspondents to discuss the upcoming nuptials.
"When I heard that Prince William had proposed to Kate Middleton, I thought it was absolutely fantastic news -- just what the country needs to cheer us all up after all the doom and gloom," said Elizabeth Emanuel, the designer of Princess Diana's gown, according to the Mail. Emanuel's vision for Kate's big day has even already been posted on some media websites.
Congratulations also arrived from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Japan. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was quick to invite the couple to his corner of the Commonwealth.
The US media also fixated on the royal news. ABC's Good Morning America opened with a fanfare over pictures of the couple.
However, some people expressed their concern.
"It seems that the media have set the tone for this marriage from the announcement in that this poor girl is being compared to Diana. If they do not give the couple space, a repeat of history may unfold," said one netizen using the online moniker 'Woodso'.
"Most people are saying good luck to them both, but it is right all the same to say, who will pay for it," said another British netizen using the online moniker 'Johnny glasgow'.

Queen to launch Facebook page

The Queen of England
Britain - The Queen is set to have an official presence on Facebook when a British Monarchy page launches on the internet-based social networking site, the British Broadcasting Corporation reports.

Buckingham Palace says it is not a personal profile page, but users can ”like” the service and receive updates on their news feed.

The Queen has reportedly embraced the web and sends e-mails. A British Monarchy Twitter feed is also available

The Facebook page is due to go live from Monday morning.

The page will also feature the Court Circular, recording the previous day‘s official engagements.

Also featured will be information about royal events and ceremonies, searchable on a UK map.

Its creation is a collaboration between Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and the Royal Collection.

Although users of the social networking site will be unable to add The Queen as a ”friend” or attempt to virtually ”poke” her as they would with anyone with a personal profile, they will be able to find out what royal events are happening nearby.

The launch of the Facebook page follows the introduction of the Monarchy‘s Flickr account earlier this year.

Greek police detonate suspicious parcel addressed to French embassy

Greek police explosives experts search the area after a controlled explosion of a suspicious package at a courier company in Athens November 4, 2010. (Xinhua/Reuters Photo)

Greek police detonated on Thursday a suspicious package addressed to the French embassy in Athens, and are examining four suspicious parcels newly found in a courier company in an Athens suburb, according to local media reports.

The first suspicious parcel was detonated by counter-terrorism experts at a courier company in a central Athens district. It was returned to the firm by French embassy employees earlier on Thursday morning, because they suspected it contained a bomb device.

No information about the four new suspicious parcels has been released so far.

According to the latest information reported by Greek media, Greek authorities are continuing their search for more bomb parcels and extremists. Another courier company in an Athens suburb notified police of the four suspicious packages.

It was reported that in the possession of the two young people arrested on Monday they have found a list with potential targets.

One possible target is said to be a European embassy in Athens and the another is said to be the embassy of an Asian country.

Since Monday, Greek and foreign police authorities have discovered more than a dozen booby-trapped parcels addressed to European leaders and foreign embassies.

Bernanke defends Fed's dramatic easing monetary policy

U.S. Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke arrives to deliver opening remarks at a Federal Reserve System symposium on "Mortgage and the Future of Housing Finance" in Arlington, Virginia, October 25, 2010.

The U.S. Federal Reserve's new round of buying government longer-term bonds was to support the recovery and sustain price stability, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said Thursday.

With economic growth at only 2 percent and unemployment hovering near double digits, "we hardly will be satisfied," Bernanke said in an article published by the Washington Post.

The Fed's monetary policymaking committee -- the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announced Wednesday it would restart a controversial policy known as quantitative easing by buying 600 billion dollars more in Treasury bonds to boost the sluggish economic growth.

57 killed, 248 wounded in Baghdad explosions

Graphics shows the casualties of a series of coordinated explosions in Baghdad on Nov. 2, 2010.

The death toll from a series of coordinated explosions in Baghdad on Tuesday rose to 57, while 248 others were wounded, an Interior Ministry source said.

"The latest report said 57 people were killed and 248 others were wounded in the attacks," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

At least 12 car bomb explosions and one roadside bombing struck on Tuesday Baghdad's northwest area of Khadhimiya, northeast areas of Zuhour, Ur and Sadr, as well as southwest areas of Bayaa and Shulaa, which are all Shiite regions. The Sunni-Shiite mixed area of Yarmuk was also hit by explosions, the source said.

Gun fights and mortar blasts could be heard by Xinhua correspondents in central Baghdad.

Gassan Ahmed, a 48-year-old teacher who lives in Bayaa district told Xinhua that there were two powerful explosions in Eshreen street where hundreds of people were shopping as they were preparing for the Adha Eid after the Muslim Haj, or pilgrimage.

"The first car bomb went off outside the Qahir al-As'ar Souq market. I was close to the scene and saw many bodies. I couldn't count them because I was busy with my injured friend," Ahmed said, adding "dozens of civilian cars were also destroyed, blood stains and human parts were scattered across the scene."

"My friend Hussan was injured in his head and a police vehicle took him as well as many other wounded and dead bodies to the Yarmuk hospital in western Baghdad," Ahmed added.
