Many women would rather die than have their breasts removed— Orode Uduaghan

Two years ago, daughter of Delta State Governor, Orode Jade Uduaghan, took upon herself the burden of creating awareness against the dreaded breast cancer. From a humble beginning in the Delta State capital, her foundation, the Pink Pearl Foundation, has taken the campaign against breast cancer outside the shores of Delta State, to Lagos metropolis and to groups who call upon her foundation. As the world marks breast cancer awareness month this October, we caught up with Orode, once more, who sheds light on the activities of her foundation and efforts to save the lives of women. However, the psychology graduate says that there is a twist as some women say that they would rather die than have their breasts removed!
One year after, what is it like with Pink Pearl Foundation?
The work of the foundation has improved a lot. We’ve been able to get more hands on deck and more organizations supporting our cause. So, it’s been a whole lot better than last year.
It’s another breast cancer awareness month, what is your foundation doing this year?
This year, we are doing a lot. A while back, we were at Delta State University. We partnered with Amobi Okoye Foundation and the African Cancer Care Initiative to do a one-week health check programme in Koko, also in Delta State.

Men And Facebook

Amara
Facebook! Facebook!! Facebook!!! It is one social networking site launched on February 4, 2004 with more than 500 million active users in July 2010. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while he was a student at Harvard University. Initially, only Harvard students were allowed to use this site. But it was later expanded to other university students in the USA and then to other parts of the world.
We have several other networking sites like Twitter, You tube, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, etc, but Facebook has gained so much popularity over the others, especially among Nigerians.
Facebook has been blocked intermittently in some countries like Syria, Iran, China, Pakistan and North Korea. Someone also told me it is prohibited in Vietnam,. I don’t know the reasons behind the blocking but I guess it has more to do with religion and productivity.
No doubt, facebook, just like every other social media is a wonderful networking site. So many good things happen on facebook. Lives have been positively affected through facebook. 2011 is here and it is one year that will decide the fate of Nigeria as we shall all march out to decide who rules the nation from May 2011.

Dingley students taste refugee life

Students Daniel, Tommy and Jordan prepare their own food.
IT’S not often primary school students spend a day living off rations in makeshift shelters. But Dingley Primary School took up the challenge to learn about the lives of refugees.
The school was transformed into a refugee camp last week so students could walk in the shoes of people fleeing war or persecution.
“We’ve been learning about where refugees come from, what makes them refugees and what we can do as individuals to help,” teacher Dianne Colacino said.
“It’s about encouraging students to develop empathy for the plight of others. They have really taken it on board.”
After arriving at school on Wednesday, the students walked local streets to imitate the trek to a refugee camp.
At the camp they were grouped into families, questioned by “guards” and given food rations.
“The students set up their family shelters with tarps and had to barter and negotiate for things they needed,” Ms Colacino said.
“I’ve heard comments like ‘we’re so lucky’ or ‘when I’m hungry I say I’m starving but I’m not really’.”
