A REMORSEFUL Sarah Murdoch last night took to the very medium which, 24 hours earlier, had made her an international headline, to clear her name.
The Australia's Next Top Model host on Tuesday night, during the show's live finale, read out the wrong name when announcing the winner of the FOX8 program's sixth series.
Murdoch blamed the glitch on being fed the wrong information through her earpiece. But yesterday Foxtel director of publicity Jamie Campbell admitted Murdoch had mistakenly announced Sydney's Kelsey Martinovich, rather than Amanda Ware, as the winner due to the pressure of live TV.
However, by late yesterday, Foxtel executive director of television Brian Walsh shifted blame from Murdoch.
"Sarah was simply not given the correct information at that stage of proceedings," he said.
Murdoch told A Current Affair the last thing she had heard through her earpiece was "Kelsey 1, Amanda 2".
"Having heard that as the last thing, I went into the read, `The winner of Australia's Next Top Model is' ... nothing," she said.
"All I knew was the last thing: `Kelsey 1, Amanda 2' - Kelsey was the winner."
She said she had then started to hear in her earpiece, "Amanda", and thought she was being prompted to interview her as the runner-up.
She discovered the mistake via a card prompt offstage.
"It was disbelief. I just couldn't believe this was happening," she said.
Murdoch dismissed claims the incident had been a stunt.
"You can see how close we are to the girls and you would never put your worst enemy in a situation like that, let alone these gorgeous girls," she said.
Martinovich was swiftly compensated for the error and, like the actual Australia's Next Top Model winner, the Gold Coast's Ware, will be sent to New York and will receive a $25,000 prize.
