A belated tally in Bridgeport, Connecticut's largest city, has given Democrat Dan Malloy a 5,000-vote edge in unofficial returns in the state's disputed governor's race.
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said the city ran out of printed ballots on election night and had to improvise with photocopies. That delayed the count, but when it was completed early Friday Malloy had edged Republican Tom Foley by 13,000 votes, the Associated Press said.
Both candidates have claimed victory. The AP said Malloy's win in Bridgeport would give the Democrat a 5,000-vote margin overall, but the authoritative news agency has yet to make a final call in the contest.
"This is not exactly the way we'd like to see things done in Bridgeport, but what I want to emphasize is that when we became aware of problems in the process of not having enough ballots printed, we reacted swiftly so that every vote was counted," Finch said. "There are no hanging chads here. Every paper ballot was counted, period."
A Malloy spokesman said the Democrat remained confident, but "we'll wait for the secretary of state [Susan Bysiewicz] to make it official, and we'll then have more to say."
