The Federal Government has inaugurated two committees for the conversion of Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic into universities.
The committees were saddled with the responsibility of proposing a workable document to guide the Federal Ministry of Education in implementing the task. To underscore the Federal Government’s resolve on the isue, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquayyatu Rufa’i, inaugurated a 10-member committee for each of the proposed universities in Abuja on Wednesday.
She recalled that the Federal Executive Council had approved the conversion of the two institutions from polytechnics into City Universities of Technology in 2007. Rufa’i, however, regretted that the process was stalled because President Obasanjo’s bill to effect the changes was not passed before the tenure of the fifth National Assembly ended.
She explained that the inauguration of the two committees followed a FEC directive on the setting up of an implementation committee to ensure the smooth implementation of the approval.
According to her, “In line with this and in furtherance of the ministry’s drive to improve access to tertiary education, as stated in the recently developed One Year Strategic Plan for the development of the education sector, I have decided to inaugurate this committee to come up with the modalities for the achievement of FEC’s directive.”
A key point in the committees’ terms of reference is the recommendation of a workable document to guide the ministry in ensuring the implementation of the FEC approval.
