The dominance of MTV Africa Music Awards, by Nigerian artistes continues unabated with the unveiling of nominees for this year‘s edition.

In all, Nigeria has the highest number of nominations - 13 - with P-Square getting nods in the Artiste of the Year, Best Group and Best Video categories. Tuface Idibia and Wande Coal are pitted against each other in the Best Male, while they are also nominated in the Artiste of the Year and Best Anglophone respectively. Banky W also got two nominations for Song of the Year and Best Video. Perennial MAMA Winner, D’banj gets a nomination for Song of the Year for “Fall in Love.” Sasha and Nneka slug it out in the Best Female category while 20-year-old Mo‘Cheddah is proving her fans right that she‘s got talent. She is up for honour in the Best New Artiste category.

But it is Congolese hip hop star, Fally Ipupa that seems to be showing the new direction for African hip hop. The charismatic artiste, who is also performing at the awards ceremony, has been nominated for Artiste of the Year, Best Male, Best Video and Best Francophone.

His compatriot, Barbara Kanam brings the Democratic Republic of Congo’s nomination tally to five with a nomination in the Best Female category.

Ghanaian singer, Sarkodie gets a first time nomination in the Best Anglophone category while four American music stars - Eminem, Drake, Rihanna and Rick Ross - battle for the Best International Act diadem.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony which held at the De Marquee, Victoria Island, Lagos, last Saturday, Chief executive officer Zain Nigeria, Rajan Swaroop, commended Nigerian artistes, “The fact that Nigerian artistes have scooped many nominations is a proof that investment in the industry is paying off. We hope this will translate to more awards for Nigerian artistes during the main show. We at Zain Nigeria are committed to supporting our artistes through various initiatives that showcase the pool of talent in this great nation.”

Also, the senior Vice President, MTV Africa, Alex Okosi, says, “This year’s MAMA is even more representative of the growth of the pan-African music scene and the added emphasis on Lusophone and Francophone artistes makes this the most exciting MAMA nominations race that we have seen so far. We congratulate all the artistes on their nominations and wish them success on December 11 in Lagos.”
