Edo announces salary increase for workers

Edo State Governor
The Edo State government has announced a new salary structure for workers in the state tertiary institutions.

Edo State Head of Service, Dr. Simon Imuekemhe made the announcement in Benin, the state capital, in reaction to the 14-day ultimatum issued by the state council of the Nigeria Labour Congress to go on strike over what they described as non-implementation of new salary structure.

Imuekheme said, “The Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole has approved and commenced the implementation of the new salary structure for workers in the state-owned tertiary institutions.”

The head of service remarked that the ultimatum to embark on strike by workers in the public service was unnecessary, saying that the approval for salary increment for the lecturers , with effect from November had been communicated to them.

He further said that government offered to pay 60 per cent of their demand but which he however said they refused to accept.

Imuekheme on behalf of the state government commended the Edo State council of the NLC and the Joint Negotiating Council for what he described as high level of understanding with the government, “in view of the meagre resources accruing to it.”
