It could be the night of the diva in Madrid at the MTV Europe Awards on Sunday, with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry leading the field with five nominations apiece and "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria hosting the event.
The U.S. singers go head-to-head in four categories -- best pop act, best song, best female act and best video -- at one of the music industry's biggest annual showcases outside the United States.
Completing the nominations for Lady Gaga is best live act and for Katy Perry "best world stage performance."
Longoria warned fans to expect the unexpected on a night when acts including Perry, Bon Jovi, Ke$ha, Kid Rock, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Shakira are all set to appear.
"I have an intense love of music and have been a host before and my family is from Spain, so it's a perfect fit in Madrid," Longoria told Reuters in a recent interview. "I'm excited about it and I love to be challenged in new ways."
One of those challenges was make a spoof rap video for the music channel's website -- an experience the actress described as "pretty terrifying."
Elsewhere in the nominations list, rapper Eminem has four nominations including best song, best male act, best hip hop and best video for his Rihanna collaboration "Love the Way You Lie."
British stadium rockers Muse, along with Thirty Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park and Kings of Leon, find themselves up against "Prince of Darkness" Ozzy Osbourne in the best rock category.
Canadian pop phenomenon Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, B.o.B, Plan B and Jason Derulo are nominated for best new act.
Bon Jovi will receive the inaugural Global Icon prize at the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on MTV websites. Most of the categories are decided by a public online vote.
According to MTV, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres have sold more than 125 million albums, performed over 2,700 concerts in over 50 countries to 35 million fans and were the number one touring act in the world in 2008.
