Three hundred and ten students in the Badagry area of Lagos State have benefitted from bursary scheme initiated by a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Samuel Sejoro.
At the third annual award ceremony of the scheme held in Badagry on Friday, the students, drawn from various tertiary institutions, were presented with N10,000 each as part of efforts to aid their educational pursuit.
Speaking at the event, Sejoro, who represents Badagry Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, said he embarked on the scheme having realised that education was pivotal to the development the nation.
He noted that the problem of financing education in Nigeria was serious as most parents and guardians have less capacity to carry out that responsibility, adding that the gesture would assist the beneficiaries in addressing part of their financial constraints.
The lawmaker disclosed that the beneficiaries are indigenes drawn from the state university, polytechnic and college of education.
Sejoro however promised that if voted for a second term, he would not only increase the financial support to beneficiaries, but also expand the scheme to include indigent students and orphans in the Badagry division.
He also disclosed that plans were underway to embark on empowerment programmes to women and widows as from next year as part of measures to enhance the welfare of their families.
