The chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Abubakar Bungudu on Monday advocated financial autonomy for Nigerian universities.
Bagudu also hinted that governing councils might soon be empowered to explore alternative sources of funding by charging appropriate fees for services.
He said this while leading members of the committee on an oversight visit to the National Universities Commission.
According to him, this would improve the quality of research, teaching and learning which in turn will improve the quality of graduates.
He said “May be we will graduate our public sector universities and give their councils the total freedom so that they can charge if they need to.
“This is not because we are heartless, but because that is the reality and then public policy should ensure that who ever gets admission into those institutions, gets funding some how.”
